Suicide is a major public health issue that is preventable, we each have a role to play to save lives and create healthy individuals, families, and communities. There is no single cause for suicide. This mental health epidemic often occurs when stressors and health issues occur to create a sense of hopelessness and despair. Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse issues increase the risk of suicide when overlooked. Taking steps to be aware of and actively manage these, and other mental health conditions, can lead to overall improved mental health.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to remember those who have struggled, and a time to acknowledge individuals, families, and communities affected by suicide. With WAIH’s commitment to support women struggling with thoughts of suicide, our goal is to participate in a suicide prevention walk on November 3, 2024, to address the profound mental health issue. If you are struggling, it is okay to share your feelings, never hesitate to contact the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
WAIH’s Lunch & Learn will provide women with information on the most significant causes of suicide. Participants will learn common risks and warning signs associated with suicide, and how to safeguard themselves and others. Also, discuss other stigmas such as “suicide is a cry for help”, when a person decides to end his or her life, there is nothing to be done to stop them and that a person wouldn’t commit suicide if they have children, just a bought a new car or is just having a difficult time. The reality is suicide is preventable, so let’s talk!
